2021

After 20 years of working in a variety of design roles, I wanted to switch from offering hands-on services into training where I can pass on my own approach to design. My initial thought was to create a series of digital courses. I’m a big fan of online courses and have probably taken well over 100 of them to improve my own skills and knowledge in a wide variety of areas. The problem was that I had no idea how to go about creating one and so thought doing an online course on creating online courses would be the way to go.. My research led me to Marissa Murgatroyd and her comments matched my own experiences of starting courses and not being motivated to finish them. So, I took the plunge and joined the Experience Product Masterclass. Taking an MVP approach to creating my XP made sense to me as this mirrored my approach as a designer. What surprised me though was that the paper plane version of my course wouldn’t be a digital version but instead it would be a 1:1 coaching offering. I love this as it puts me in direct contact with the people I’m serving. I know from experience that there is no better way of getting feedback than engaging directly with the people I am designing for. The Experience Product Masterclass is all the people you want to serve and this follows though into the lessons on engaging and selling your XP. This is new to me, made doubly tricky as I’ve only just started using Facebook. The Give Them What They Want & Chatterbox Campaign are helping me identify the problem that I can solve for my ideal customers. When I started the course my target was to get my first sale. That hasn’t happened. Whilst I’m disappointed I can clearly see it for what it is. Valuable Feedback! Going into the Experience Product Masterclass I had an idea (or more accurately hypothesis) of what course I was going to offer and who I was going to offer it to. But engaging with my ideal customer through the two marketing campaigns has shown me that I need to pivot my thinking. My next step is to run through the first 3 stages again, and again until I ‘iterate my way to awesome’.
